I just wanted to pas along another training for those that want to learn more about working with individuals that have criminal backgrounds. There is a great workshop that Abbie Haluska actually runs called "Demystifying Criminal Backgrounds". This training has a plethora of information on laws related to crimnal background checks, record expungement, negligent hiring concerns and a short overview of the criminal justice system. This training is part of Project GAUGE which is housed at the Council on Crime and Justice. Anyone interrested in attending a training can go to the website at http://gauge.crimeandjustice.org for more information.

It is possible to have the application fee waived for most schools. Very few have a process set up for AmeriCorps members. From experience, I recommend first contacting the Graduate School Admissions department of your school of interest and asking about a fee waiver because you are an AmeriCorps member. If the answer you receive is a no, find the contact information to the Dean of the Graduate School. Every school has a different structure, so make sure that you are contacting the Dean that corresponds to your program, incase there are multiple Deans. I sent letters like this to programs I was interested in, and every school that I sent a letter to has waived the fee. I just stated that I was an AmeriCorps member, described my position briefly, described the living allowance, and provided a letter from my coordinator verifying that I am serving.

As an AmeriCorps member you can apply to have the GRE fee lowered. You get a one time 50% discount, so instead of paying $140, you pay $70. That includes the test and 4 schools you want scores sent to. Every additional school is $20. To apply for the reduction you have to fill out a FAFSA form and contact a university to fill out a reduction certificate based on your FAFSA. Once the school fills out one of these, you send it to GRE, they process it for about 3-4 weeks, and then you get a letter from GRE with your confirmation number allowing you to register at a test location.

Hey everyone, great news, we have two confirmed speakers for the Monday event. Bob Jackson just got back to me and said that he will be able to speak at the event also. So, we're moving with that. We could possibly get someone from Klobuchar's office to speak also (she herself is not in town). What do people think?

I just thought I would let everyone know that after speaking to several people in the financial aid office over at Augsburg College, I found out that Augsburg no longer matches the education award and has not done so in the last few years. The reason for this is that recipients of the award were not getting any more financial aid with this award then they would have had they not been awarded this scholarship. Realizing this, Augsburg decided to phase out the matching ed award. However, Augsburg does have tuition credit awarded to Americorps Alums that are returning to school for the weekend college program or one of the graduate programs. Eligible students will get a 25% tuition credit awarded for one course each term for the duration of study.

Hello All
I was just registering for our VISTA conference that is during AmeriCorps week and noticed that the times they are posting to VISTAs on Monday are from 12-4. I called my VISTA leader and requested they change the time to 5-9 pm. I am pretty sure this is the time we decided on. If this is incorrect please contact Katie Bull ASAP: 651.645.2277 x216 kbull@themlc.org.
Is there anyone else we should be contacting to make aware about this time change? I think it can be cleared up with the VISTAs who already registered but this could cause a problem elsewhere if we don't catch it.

I have been calling restaurants around the twin cities to see if they would be willing to donate food to the event. The restaurants I have contacted I just found on google, so if anyone knows of a good restaurant that they want me to contact let me know. Also, if you have had places donate food for any of your corps events I would definitely be willing to contact them. I have not heard back from any businesses yet, and am hoping that I'll have it solidified by the next meeting. Also, does anyone know if we will be able to provide them with a receipt?

Hi all,
I sent an email out to everyone I had on my email list. Please get back to me if this is something you're interested in pursuing:
I'm not sure what has been set in stone so far in terms of the Monday kick-off event. Do we have a location or speakers lined up? If not, both women wanted to let us know the city is willing to help us with a location to host the kick-off. Also, that Mayor Coleman could be one of our speakers, and from what they told me, would be excited to attend. However, if we would like him to be able to attend that Monday, I need to email them back ASAP. Please let me know what your ideas are, what progress has been made so far, and whether or not I should "reserve" the mayor. :-)

So.....I've been talking with my VISTA leader about political activism recently and we ran into a problem that may also cause a problem with the Education award letter. Policy may not let AmeriCorps State or VISTA members caucus, petition or write letters to legislators for VISTA issues, including our concerns with the Education award and its taxation. Erica, my VISTA leader, spoke with Sam Scheuth...and he seems to be concerned about this, policy-wise. So I am waiting for him to call me back. I am going to speak to him about my personal concerns with it, specifically with caucusing for VISTA issues...but I will talk to him about the letter if others want me to. Just a heads up...so that technicalities can get hammered out before people put a lot of time into this.

Here is a link to the Domestic Volunteer Service Act: http://www.americorps.gov/pdf/dvsa_dec99.pdf
On page 24, it gives specifics of what you can and can't do with funding from Americorps. I think that means on time that you're counting for Americorps. I also found a bunch of info about VISTAs and the Hatch Act and I'll bring that to next meeting.

Hi all, Yesterday I was able to speak to Natalie Fedie with the Department of Planning and Economic Development, and Erica Schumacher with the mayor's office, about coordinating a larger-scale service project in St. Paul for AmeriCorps week. This would replace the parks cleanup we'd originally planned (at least in St. Paul, due to their big parks clean-up event already scheduled in April... not sure about Minneapolis). However, they are very excited to partner with the ICC and AmeriCorps for the Invest St. Paul project. There are four main neighborhood sites in the Invest St. Paul program: Dayton's Bluff, Frogtown, North End, and the Lower East Side areas. They also have 8 auxiliary sites in mind, including some "natural" areas (i.e. near the river) that could use attention. Our duties as volunteers would be much the same as they would be in a parks cleanup: mainly litter pickup on the blocks, around properties, etc. Natalie did mention they could develop other tasks to accommodate volunteers who might be unable to participate in the more physical aspects of the program. In terms of numbers of volunteers at the sites: they said it will vary but it seems as though each site can accommodate a lot... we can wait for Kaja to hear back from the program coordinators with estimated numbers of participants. The City of St. Paul will be working with district councils throughout the next couple of months to determine the areas of highest need within each neighborhood. The city will be responsible for any garbage pick-up after the event. They asked if we could supply most of the materials (gloves, bags) if possible, but can give us resources on where to go to get these things in bulk, for relatively cheap.
Natalie also mentioned that this will be an excellent publicity opportunity for everyone. As a member of the PR committee, I'll explore this as much as possible!

Happy Friday all!
I was able to finally get a hold of a woman from the Minneapolis Parks Dept about collaborating on for our service-project day. She gave us the go ahead and was excited that we wanted to help out where we could.
We discussed Earth day and Arbor Day (which is the week before AmeriCorps Week), and although there are some projects being completed during those two time periods, the projects are at specific parks and there will probably be more than enough for us to do still...
We are thinking that there will be a variety of projects people will work on...perhaps the majority of volunteers will work on specific projects with other paid park staff (i.e. landscaping, gardening, etc...) Also, as a side note, garbage bags, gloves and garbage pick up will all be provided by the parks!
However, her and I need to iron out some details before we go forward with everything. SO there will be more to come!
What do people think? Any suggestions/desires???

I know this isn't the best paper to contact writers but I was looking in the Star Tribune today and I noticed an article on housing in Plymouth titled " Looking for a place to call home in Plymouth" This article is about low income individuals entering a lottery in plymouth in order to receive a federally subsidized housing voucher. The author of this article is Jenna Ross. I think a good idea to contact her for PR purposes. I am going to add a link on the wiki of the article where her contact information is listed and for your enjoyment to read...

I made the proposed corrections...thank you for your feedback! Just a few notes on your notes... 1. The VISTA leaders/ program managers should be able to give us an exact number for how many of their members have dropped within the current service year. What do you think of the way it is worded now?
2.The additional questions for previous members are great! I added them in...check to see if you like the way I phrased them.
3. I think we should ask the question of whether current members hesitated before joining. It may be obvious, but a rule of thumb in surveys is to make them as obvious/easy as possible and avoid all possible confusion. So I suggest we keep it in there...it takes 2 seconds to answer. BUT I am open to more discussion on it and it really isn't that big of a deal.
Let me know what you think over all.
Are we going to plan on having copies of this ready by the ICC meeting in a few weeks? Should we start putting together the survey on Survey Monkey and distributing to our fellow members, leaders, program managers for a test run?

I think everything is pretty good except for Question #3 for the Vista Leaders and Program managers survey. I think the question should read "What if any factors contributed to the decision of the Americorps member to leave their position?" Otherwise it looks great...I will let you know if I think of anything else.

Leaders and Mangers Survey
Question 1: I think we need a time period in the first question. As in, "how many members have dropped out in the past year? Is this average?"
I think the rest of it looks good. I do have the overall comment from my first set that all the Vista only questions should be at the end of a section.
Thank you Emily for writing all of this up, it looks really good.
