To-Do:

Emily has contacted Sue McGraff, Volunteer Coordinator with Minneapolis Parks and Rec.
  • Sue was informed that we could commit a minimum of about 90 volunteers to the Minneapolis parks.
  • Sue will be getting back to us before our April ICC meeting with a proposed list of projects in the Minneapolis parks.
  • Minneapolis Park and Rec will provide garbage bags, gloves and coordinate trash pick-up at the end of the day. They will also provide any other materials needed for other possible projects.
  • Find out size of parks (I will do this, if necessary, once we receive the project list)

Jen has contacted the City of St. Paul to partner with the Invest St. Paul program!
  • Will continue to communicate with city department coordinators to determine "areas of need" (where and how the volunteers will be distributed)
  • Find a way to get mass quantities of garbage bags and gloves! (City will arrange for garbage pickup)
  • Will coordinate with Kaja to assign members to sites
  • Make a media plan (how to get the project, and AmeriCorps Week in general, covered)

Kaja will contact Serve MN and CNCS
  • How many people should we expect?
  • Let them know that we'll figure out which parks and the specifics, and then they'll have to contact the individual corps.

Did I forget anything?

Hi all,

Yesterday I was able to speak to Natalie Fedie with the Department of Planning and Economic Development, and Erica Schumacher with the mayor's office, about coordinating a larger-scale service project in St. Paul for AmeriCorps week. This would replace the parks cleanup we'd originally planned (at least in St. Paul, due to their big parks clean-up event already scheduled in April... not sure about Minneapolis). However, they are very excited to partner with the ICC and AmeriCorps for the Invest St. Paul project.

There are four main neighborhood sites in the Invest St. Paul program: Dayton's Bluff, Frogtown, North End, and the Lower East Side areas. They also have 8 auxiliary sites in mind, including some "natural" areas (i.e. near the river) that could use attention. Our duties as volunteers would be much the same as they would be in a parks cleanup: mainly litter pickup on the blocks, around properties, etc. Natalie did mention they could develop other tasks to accommodate volunteers who might be unable to participate in the more physical aspects of the program. In terms of numbers of volunteers at the sites: they said it will vary but it seems as though each site can accommodate a lot... we can wait for Kaja to hear back from the program coordinators with estimated numbers of participants. The City of St. Paul will be working with district councils throughout the next couple of months to determine the areas of highest need within each neighborhood. The city will be responsible for any garbage pick-up after the event. They asked if we could supply most of the materials (gloves, bags) if possible, but can give us resources on where to go to get these things in bulk, for relatively cheap.

Natalie also mentioned that this will be an excellent publicity opportunity for everyone. As a member of the PR committee, I'll explore this as much as possible!

Happy Friday all!

I was able to finally get a hold of a woman from the Minneapolis Parks Dept about collaborating on for our service-project day. She gave us the go ahead and was excited that we wanted to help out where we could.

We discussed Earth day and Arbor Day (which is the week before AmeriCorps Week), and although there are some projects being completed during those two time periods, the projects are at specific parks and there will probably be more than enough for us to do still...

We are thinking that there will be a variety of projects people will work on...perhaps the majority of volunteers will work on specific projects with other paid park staff (i.e. landscaping, gardening, etc...) Also, as a side note, garbage bags, gloves and garbage pick up will all be provided by the parks!

However, her and I need to iron out some details before we go forward with everything. SO there will be more to come!

What do people think? Any suggestions/desires???
